Establishment of the Shanghai Community based Adult Cohort and Biobank

Urbanization has led to population aggregation, increased exposure to environmental risk factors, changes in residents’ lifestyles, and health disparities among populations. The Shanghai Community Based Adult Cohort (SCACB) and Biobank was established to learn the prevalence and incidence of noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs), and to identify environmental, lifestyle, and genetic risk factors in adults (20–74 years old) living in suburban area of Shanghai with rapid urbanization, and to provide a scientific basis for the precise prevention and control of chronic diseases.
The Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort and Biobank (SSACB) study was launched by School of Public Health, Fudan University, granted by “Shanghai Gaofeng Discipline Development Project for Public Health and Preventive Medicine”. Four districts including Songjiang, Jiading, Minhang and Xuhui, which are rapidly developing in urbanization, were selected. Permanent residents aged 20-74 years were recruited as the cohort members. Epidemiological investigation, physical examination and laboratory tests were used to collect the basic data of the members. Blood and urine samples were collected to establish a biobank. An informatics follow-up sharing platform was established by linking the baseline data to the electronic medical record system, chronic disease management system, cancer registry, infectious disease reporting system, and death registry.

Environmental exposure to antibiotics and its health effects in China

Antibiotics are widely used to treat and/or prevent infectious diseases in human and animals worldwide. Human exposure to antibiotics has been found to be associated with metabolic, immune, and psychological conditions (e.g., obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, asthma, and autism) and bacterial resistance by disrupting gut microbiota. Due to the mass usage, aquatic environment and food have been largely contaminated by antibiotics. Besides the large-dose antibiotic exposure deriving from clinical use, human can be environmentally exposed to low-level antibiotics through contaminated drinking water and/or food. A concern has arisen about the adverse effects of environmental exposure to antibiotics on human health. However, there was a lack of efficient method to assessing the environmental exposure to antibiotics and then the environmental exposure level to antibiotics remained unclear for a long time in the past.
The lecture would introduce the development of efficient assessment method of environmental exposure to antibiotics, elaborate on the environmental exposure to antibiotics and potential health effects in Chinese population, and provide its implications for other areas in the world.
